Flexographic and Gravure.

A combined AFTA / EPA Victoria steering committee was initiated in 1989. Mike Lyons & Associates have been involved with this group from the outset. Its purpose over the years has been in the preparation of codes of practice, the first being issued in 1995 and the second in 1999. The current code (issued in February 2004) is summarised under EPA Publication 940.

From 1st July 2009 onwards, no printing operation may emit more than 250 tonnes per annum. Any operation likely to exceed this limit or expand operations to a point where this limit is exceeded, will need to consider appropriate means of reduction. This can be achieved with a variety of methods including improvements in ink transfer (finer anilox rollers), water based inks, solventless inks (UV curing) or VOC destruction by Thermal Oxidation. Currently, the Regenerative Thermal Oxidiser (RTO) is considered the most economical means of achieving VOC oxidation for the Flexographic and Gravure industries.

We have prepared a spreadsheet which will allow you to enter ink and solvent purchases, solvent wastes sent off site, utilities such as gas, electricity, LPG, water etc. and production details. From these inputs it will calculate your annual VOC emissions, individual press emissions, performance ratios, greenhouse gases, and NPI reporting.
